◼︎「Azizam」
◼︎「Azizam」
◼︎「Azizam」

◼︎「Old Phone」

Ed Sheeran’s upcoming new album Play, set to be released on September 12, 2025, has already had some of its tracks pre-released.
One of the songs included is “Azizam,” which was released on April 4 this year.
Ed collaborated on the track with Ilya Salmanzadeh, a Swedish producer born in Iran.
◼︎ What “Azizam” Means
“Azizam” means “my dear” in Persian. In an interview, Ed explained it refers to a beloved or cherished person.
◼︎ The Sound of “Azizam”
Ed often incorporates elements of traditional Irish music into his work. He mentioned that the rhythms and scales in “Azizam” are similar to Irish trad music. He also said that music is a universal language.
◼︎ My Experience When “Azizam” Was Released
Two years ago, while I was studying abroad in Vancouver, Canada, I attended Ed Sheeran’s tour concert. I went alone, with only limited English and a gut-feeling-based understanding of communication. I sat next to an elderly couple, probably in their 70s, and was impressed by how Ed’s music truly transcends generations.
When “Azizam” was released, my inner language nerd got really excited. Persian was a language I had no real connection to, and I had never used it in daily life. I knew of its existence, but never looked into it deeply — until then. I was fascinated by discovering this new word, and the melody, which reminded me a bit of “Shape of You”, gave me a nostalgic feeling.
◼︎ Old Phone
“Old Phone,” another song from Play, was inspired by Ed finding his old phone from 2015 and powering it back on.
He found photos, voice memos, and messages from friends, exes, and family — calling it “like a time machine.”
I actually still have my very first cell phone too. When I turned it on after a long time and saw the Apple logo followed by the familiar home screen, it brought back a wave of memories from that time.
To be honest, I’ve avoided looking at that phone because I didn’t want to get stuck in the past. But sometimes, it’s okay to revisit those memories.
Photos from my high school trips to Osaka and Okinawa, which I saved up money to take, still bring back that same sense of excitement when I look at them — even now. 🙂
“Old Phone” is a song that lets me reflect on those memories, and it’s become one of my current go-to driving tracks.
