From Bunraku to Ramen—A Journey Sparked by Music in Kumamoto

I planned my first sightseeing trip to Kumamoto to see the Koji Tamaki Symphonic Concert.

Although I had been to Kumamoto Prefecture before, this was my first time visiting for sightseeing—and I had almost no information. So I decided to start with the basics: Kumamoto Castle and ramen!

■ Roadside Station Seiwa Bunraku-no-Sato

The first stop was “Seiwa Bunraku-no-Sato,” a roadside station where I took a short break.

It features the only dedicated Bunraku theater in Kyushu, where traditional puppet theater from the Edo period is still performed.

In the plaza connecting the theater and the rest area, I was surprised to see figures of Luffy and Chopper from One Piece!

That’s when I learned that Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, is from Kumamoto. I was genuinely impressed and proud that such a world-famous manga artist comes from Kyushu. Better late than never! 😄

■ Lunch at Fuki Seimen Kenkyujo (Main Store)

For lunch, I had dipping noodles (tsukemen) at Fuki Seimen Kenkyujo.

The soup, made from kombu and other ingredients, paired perfectly with the glossy noodles. The dipping sauce was light and soy sauce–based—very easy to enjoy!

■ Kumamoto Castle

With a full stomach, I headed to the highlight of the trip—Kumamoto Castle.

There were many international tourists, and I could hear all kinds of languages spoken around me.

I found myself wondering, “Did the castle’s builder ever imagine such a diverse future?”

As I climbed toward the main keep, I suddenly saw… a samurai! (Yes, a performer in costume—but still exciting!)

I’m not very good with historical facts, so I’ll leave it at that 😅

One of the volunteer guides told me something interesting:

Kumamoto Castle was designed facing toward Kagoshima, so what many people think is the “front” is actually not. I learned something new!

■ Hotel: GRIDS Premium Hotel Kumamoto

Finally, it was time to check in at the GRIDS Premium Hotel Kumamoto, which I found through Agoda.

I personally prefer rooms with separate bathrooms and toilets, and this hotel had just what I wanted.

Note: The bathroom has only a shower. If you’re someone who likes to soak in the tub after a long day, you might want to double-check this before booking!

The hotel is conveniently located near the city center, with on-site parking, so check-in went smoothly.

Next up: the main event—the concert report! Stay tuned! 🎶
