The World Chooses Spider-Man, but Japan Chooses Chiikawa?

Chiikawa vs. Spider-Man
— The World Chooses Spider-Man, but Japan Chooses Chiikawa?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been a massive hit around the world.

Spider-Man is, of course, one of Marvel’s most famous superheroes. Marvel movies and Spider-Man have a huge following in Japan as well, although I have to admit that I’ve barely watched any Marvel movies myself.

Even I know Spider-Man, though. That probably tells you just how famous he is.

The latest movie in the series, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, was released in Japan on July 31, 2026. It debuted at No. 1 at the Japanese box office, and by August 26, it had attracted more than 3 million moviegoers and earned over 5 billion yen in Japan.

Globally, it has been an even bigger phenomenon, earning more than $2.2 billion worldwide.

So yes, the world is very much in Spider-Man mode.

But then something interesting happened in Japan.

The weekend after Spider-Man’s debut, a movie that had already been in theaters for three weeks climbed back to No. 1.

And that movie was…

Chiikawa.

The world chose Spider-Man.

Japan chose Chiikawa.

Somehow, that feels very Japanese.

So, What Exactly Is Chiikawa?

Chiikawa began as a manga posted on social media by the Japanese illustrator Nagano.

Today, it has its own TV anime featuring Chiikawa, Hachiware, Usagi, and other “small and cute creatures” doing their best to get through everyday life.

At first glance, it looks like a simple story about adorable characters.

But don’t let them fool you.

They have to work to earn money, take qualification exams, and sometimes suddenly find themselves in surprisingly dangerous situations. Behind those cute little faces is a world that can be strangely tough—and occasionally unsettling.

You start watching it thinking, “Aww, so cute!”

And then, every now and again, you find yourself thinking:

“Wait… is this actually kind of deep?”

That is Chiikawa.

Its first feature film, Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island, was released on July 24.

During its first three days, the movie attracted around 1.5 million viewers and earned more than 2.2 billion yen. It debuted at No. 1 before dropping to second place when Spider-Man arrived.

But the following week, Chiikawa climbed right back to the top.

By August 24, the movie had attracted 7.66 million viewers and earned more than 11 billion yen.

Those tiny, cute creatures are surprisingly powerful.

This Actually Happened Before

Interestingly, Japan has done something similar before.

Back in 2019, Avengers: Endgame became a record-breaking global phenomenon.

While the world was going crazy for the Avengers, another movie was putting up a surprisingly strong fight in Japan:

Detective Conan.

Detective Conan is a Japanese mystery manga and anime about Shinichi Kudo, a brilliant high school detective who is forced to take a mysterious drug while investigating a criminal organization.

Instead of killing him, however, the drug transforms his body into that of an elementary school student.

He then takes on the identity of Conan Edogawa—a boy who looks like a child but still has the mind of a teenage detective—and solves countless cases while secretly investigating the organization responsible for his transformation.

In 2019, Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire initially lost the top spot at the Japanese weekend box office when Avengers: Endgame opened.

But one week later, Conan took No. 1 back.

By the end of their theatrical runs in Japan, Detective Conan had earned about 9.37 billion yen, compared with about 6.13 billion yen for Avengers: Endgame.

While the world was watching the Avengers save the universe, Japan was watching Conan solve another murder.

And now, in 2026, while the world is watching Spider-Man save the day, Japan is watching Chiikawa and friends struggle their way through life on an island.

Japan really does like doing its own thing.

And Then I Fell Into the Chiikawa Rabbit Hole

I actually like both Chiikawa and Detective Conan.

At first, I assumed the new Chiikawa movie was mainly a cute movie for children, especially since it was released during Japan’s summer vacation season.

Then I started reading articles about it.

Some people simply came out of the theater saying, “That was so cute!”

Others—especially adults—were apparently leaving with a very different question:

“Was that really a children’s movie?”

That caught my attention.

How could something featuring such ridiculously cute creatures also have a story deep enough to make adults question what they had just watched?

So I started watching Chiikawa on Netflix.

And, well…

I got hooked.(笑)

It’s surreal, cute, occasionally unsettling, and strangely emotional. The more I watched these “small and cute creatures” trying their best to survive their everyday lives, the more attached to them I became.

The episodes are very short, so you think, “I’ll just watch one.”

Then another.

And another.

And suddenly, you care deeply about a tiny creature called Hachiware.

Chiikawa is dangerous.

In Japan, Anime Is Simply Part of Everyday Life

When I think about all of this, Japan really is an interesting country.

For those of us who grew up here, anime doesn’t necessarily feel like something special that we actively have to seek out.

It has always been around us.

You can turn on the TV in the morning and find a short anime segment during a morning program. Walk into a convenience store and you’ll see products featuring anime characters. Go to a train station and you might pass a huge advertisement for the latest anime movie.

And anime isn’t just for children.

Adults go to see the new Detective Conan movie every year. They buy Chiikawa merchandise. They look forward to movies featuring characters they have loved for years.

Sometimes, we don’t even consciously choose to surround ourselves with anime and characters.

They are simply already there.

Maybe that helps explain why something interesting happens when one of the biggest Hollywood movies in the world arrives in Japan.

In 2019:

The world had the Avengers.
Japan had Detective Conan.

And in 2026:

The world has Spider-Man.
Japan has Chiikawa.

There is something wonderfully strange about tiny, cute characters being able to compete with superheroes who literally save the world.

And perhaps this summer’s box-office rankings have shown us something very simple about Japan:

Anime isn’t just entertainment here.

It is part of everyday life.
