The Day a New Beginning and an Ending Crossed

My neighbor in the same apartment building died alone.

Today was wrapped in the gentle warmth of spring.

After finishing work supporting a wedding celebration for two people beginning a new chapter in their lives, I returned home.

Standing in front of the entrance was a woman who looked uneasy and unsettled.

After I parked my car and got out, she spoke to me in a trembling voice.

“Um… do you happen to know the phone number for the real estate agency here, or the landlord? She’s my aunt, but she hasn’t picked up her newspapers, and she’s not answering her phone.”

When I looked at the mailbox, I saw a stack of newspapers that seemed to have been left there for several days.

Sensing that something was wrong, I immediately called the real estate agency.

They said they would come, and I hurried back into my apartment.

After a while, it seemed that someone from the agency had arrived, and I felt a brief sense of relief.

But before long, the police and an ambulance arrived.

At that point, I had a feeling of what had happened.

When I looked out the window, I saw that onlookers had started gathering too.

Holding back my true thoughts — that this was not some spectacle for people to stare at and that they should just go home — I went back to the sofa and fell asleep.

…Ding dong.

The intercom rang.

It was a young female police officer.

She was there to ask when I had last seen the woman’s aunt, and whether I had noticed anything unusual about her.

I told her that I had seen her car gone two weeks earlier, but aside from that, I didn’t know anything.

We only ever happened to see each other in the parking lot and exchange greetings.

After answering her questions, I asked the officer,

“Was she okay?”

She had died.

The officer then asked how I knew that something might have happened to her, so I explained the sequence of events.

I never imagined that a lonely death could happen so close to me.

I had not even noticed the newspapers piling up.

I was glad that I happened to return home at the right time and was able to help in some way.

It was a strange kind of timing, to witness both the joyful beginning of one person’s new chapter and the end of another person’s life on the same day.

It was a moment that made me reflect once again on what death really means.
