“So, the daily posting challenge ended up being a classic three-day streak, didn’t it?”
That merciless voice inside me echoes loud and clear. Still, here I am writing again, aren’t I? Let’s just say it’s fine—and yes, there’s a cheeky version of me winking as I type this.
I took the weekend off from writing. After squeezing out every last bit of my limited vocabulary and overworking both my typing fingers and my already-strained eyes, I had reached my limit. These days, I’m constantly reminded of how far I still have to go.
On Saturday evening, I went to a ramen shop as promised with a friend. Following their recommendation—“The seasoned bamboo shoots here are great!”—I added them as a topping. They were mildly spicy and on the softer side.
My ritual is to first taste the broth with a spoon, then gradually add grated garlic and spicy miso, which are staples at most ramen shops. Though, calling it a “style” might be a bit of an overstatement.
After devouring the hot bowl of ramen, we decided to cool down by going to see the cherry blossoms at night. That’s when I came across a new spring release: Kirin’s “Spring Breeze” beer. It was fruity and surprisingly easy to drink. It reminded me of the dried squid I once had at my uncle’s house—so of course, I bought some to snack on.
The table was set right in the middle of the illuminated cherry blossom trees. It was one of those spring nights where everything just felt… right.
On Sunday, I watched an old overseas medical drama I used to love. Around lunchtime, I walked over to a local bakery. The lady there greeted me with, “Oh? Nina-chan, did you lose weight?” and I couldn’t help but feel a little giddy.
Though the savory bread I’d been craving was sold out, I managed to snag a delicious loaf of white bread.
Feeling the momentum, I went ahead and did my grocery shopping for dinner too. There, under a sign reading “Today’s Special,” was a tempting beef short rib rice bowl. I couldn’t resist. But when I got home, I decided to eat it right away for lunch instead.
I opened the lid and took a bite—rice and beef together. “…Huh? Hard to chew… my jaw feels heavy.” That’s when I realized the culprit: the dried squid from Saturday. My cheeks were sore from all the chewing.
Maybe that’s why the bakery lady thought I looked thinner—thanks to the squid workout. And so ended a weekend full of small, yet memorable moments.
